Boomer

Gus:  A few weeks ago, the Mama and her co-workers heard a cat meowing in their office.  It is a pet friendly office so a cat meowing is nothing new.  The problem was that the office cat was hanging out with them sleeping.  After a little investigating, they discovered a new cat sitting inside the office front door with his food, blankets, and a planter of pet grass.  They looked outside only to see a woman driving off.

We're not really sure why the woman dumped the cat at the Mama's office.  Her building is next door to the shelter, but it doesn't look like an animal shelter.

The cat that was dumped was very confused.  He didn't understand what was going on.  Mama and her co-workers took him next door to the shelter where he was poked and prodded and put in a cage.

The woman that dumped him eventually felt guilty and called the shelter to confess what she had done.  She said his name was Boomer and he was 20 years old.  Rather than facing charges of animal abandonment, she ultimately surrendered Boomer to the shelter.

As part of the poking and prodding, the shelter discovered that Boomer was FIV positive.  While cats can a live long, happy life with FIV, animal shelters in Kansas cannot adopt out FIV+ cats.  Boomer soon found himself in a van being transferred to Great Plains SPCA's campus in Independence, Missouri.

The volunteers at Great Plains SPCA in Independence are amazing!  They've taken Boomer under their wing.  They are showing him lots of love and giving him lots of pets and brushing.  Boomer is very appreciative showering them with headbutts and purrs, but it isn't the same as having your own family.

Can you please help an old guy out?  If you can't adopt him, can you share his story to help him find a home?

Boomer is very sweet.  Pearl thinks he is handsome.  He even has a heart on his nose!

Here is Boomer's story in his own words:

"Well hello. My name is Boomer. You might be asking yourself what a most distinguished older gentleman kitty like me is doing here at Great Plains. I understand your confusion. I am a sweet senior who is a little confused myself over this strange situation I find myself in. I was a beloved pet for many years but that changed suddenly, through no fault of my own. I am now a homeless cat. So sad a world we live in isn't it? I should be living out my golden years as a cherished member of a family. A sunny window spot, some loving pets, the security of knowing that I am loved, but here I sit in this shelter. The people here are doing the very best they can to help me adjust and make me feel comfortable but the reality is simple, I am in a shelter. I am black and white and oh so loving. I have a purr loud enough to rival any of the youngsters here. I would love to meet you in purrson. I just need someone to love me for the time I have left. I promise to give you all I can give.
Purrs and kisses,
Papa Boomer"

Boomer is now available for adoption from Great Plains SPCA in Independence.

  6. This is so heartbreaking and I just don't understand how someone could do this to any cat, let alone a 20-year-old cat! He looks so great for his age. I hope he gets adopted into the fantastic, loving home that he deserves. (Growing up, I had a white and black kitty also named Boomer!)
